Why..
Looks familiar?
Yes, we all know what this symbol stands for: summation. But do we really know what it is called? I've seen many people call this wrongly. Most people call this wrongly. In Secondary school maths, many teachers call this summation. Some don't even know what it is called and just tell us that it is the symbol for summation lol. All that is wrong. This symbol, that we are all so familiar with, is called Sigma. Yes, Sigma. And it bothers me to see everyone calling this "the summation symbol" or "summation".
Sure, the first time I told people this everyone was arguing. No one believed me. Why? Their reason was because it's used to represent summation. Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with their reasoning. Their reasoning agrees with me but their opinions contradict me. Sure, all of us use it to represent summation but the symbol is called Sigma. It's just like how we use symbols to represent other stuff like s for displacement. We don't call s displacement. It'll be weird. It's like, hey what do you call this symbol "s"? (assuming you dont know how S sounds like or is pronounced) And someone responds by saying it's displacement. Weird isn't it?
The first time I referred to Sigma as sigma got me some weird responses as well. Like people saying, whoa, how come you use such profound terms like sigma and stuff? Like it's some really high end clever thing.
It's actually a greek alphabet in it's upper case and it carries the "s" sound. There are 2 other versions of Sigma. The lowercase Sigma and the Lunate Sigma.
Oh well, I guess nobody would care so call it summation all you want. I'll stick with Sigma. And if you want to argue, I'll be ready, anytime. (Even at 4am in the morning, carried away by a moonlight shadow) You'll just make yourself look stupid.
Enough said..
